Tonight Polygon has reported that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will not have a single player campaign. Eurogamer sources have corroborated this news.

Polygon sources indicate that as the release date of Black Ops 4 approached, "it became clear that the development of the single-player campaign was not going to be completed." Since then, according to Polygon sources, developer Treyarch has focused on expanding multiplayer and zombie mode. There will be an emphasis on co-op modes as potential substitutes for the typical single-player campaign experience.

Forget what you know is the official motto of Black Ops 4. Maybe it had double meaning.

This matches the information Eurogamer received about the development of Black Ops 4 in February. Our sources indicated that Treyarch had decided to ditch the game's campaign in early 2018 to focus on multiplayer.

A source close to the project told us that the Black Ops 4 campaign was a "Career" mode that had cooperative missions with another player. Game development is tricky, of course, and plans change, so it's not clear yet if those co-op missions will make it to the final product as the potential replacement for single-player mode.

Last night the page specialized in Call of Duty charlieINTEL, which has provided valuable information about the series in the past, indicated that Black Ops 4 will have a Battle Royale mode developed by another Activision studio: Raven Software. Kotaku corroborated this information, in addition to Polygon's information about the lack of a single player mode.

One of the Eurogamer sources has corroborated the information about the Battle Royale mode. Adding context, he said that COD's Battle Royale might not reach the magic 100 player figure of other Battle Royale titles when the game comes out, but the developers want to hit that number. Again, it should be noted that game development is a complicated business and plans change often.

It seems like Treyarch has had a lot on its plate during the development of this year's Call of Duty, with plans for a single-player campaign scrapped in early 2018 and the inclusion of a Battle Royale mode. The team has had to deal with this and an earlier release date than usual. Black Ops 4 comes out on October 12, before the typical Call of Duty date (November) and just before the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, which comes out on October 26.

The inclusion of a Battle Royale mode in Call of Duty is not much of a surprise, given that an analyst last month suggested in a report that Activision wanted to bring Battle Royale to Call of Duty at some point, noting that Activision is fully aware of the popularity of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite.

Last month Eurogamer reported that Activision intended to release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered this year and that it would not have multiplayer. So we're going to have a main Call of Duty without a single player campaign and a Modern Warfare 2 remaster without online multiplayer. Maybe Activision will try to tie the two games together in some way? The Modern Warfare 2 Remastered campaign may be gifted to those who pre-order Black Ops 4 or to those who purchase one of the more expensive limited editions.

We'll know more on May 17, when Activision will reveal Black Ops 4 to the world, and even more at E3 in June.
