How To Transfer Data Between Any Two PS4s

This article is more than 4 years old.

When you upgrade from one PS4 to another, you're faced with the problem of transferring your data from the old PS4's internal drive to the new console. If you've taken advantage of the recent update that enabled external storage for the PS4, you also have to move the external drive that was formatted and tagged as Extended Storage onthe old PS4. Transferring the external drive couldn't be easier, transferring the data between the internal drives takes a bit more work. Here's how to do both.

Preparing to transfer between two internal drives

The PS4 will walk you through the transfer process but there are several things it's useful to know before you start.

  • You have to be signed into the same account on both PS4s. It's helpful to have your username and password handy.
  • Both consoles have to be up to date. To check and update if necessary, go to Settings>System Software Update. Don't assume the new console has the latest system software.
  • Both consoles have to be connected to the internet on the same network. You can connect both to your router or connect the machines with a LAN cable.
  • The new PS4 has to be connected to your television; the old one doesn't although it can be useful to have a TV connection for both if something goes wrong.
  • The destination drive is formatted and everything on it is lost whenever you do a transfer. If you downloaded games to the new PS4 before you started the transfer, you'll have to download them again. If you started to play those games, your save files will be lost. If you try to get around this limitation by transferring your save files from the new PS4 to the old with the idea of transferring them back, you'll wipe the drive on the old PS4.
  • Unsynced trophies will not transfer. If you care about trophies, make sure yours are all synced before you carry out the transfer.
  • You can shorten the transfer time by deleting any games on the old PS4 that you're no longer playing before you initiate the transfer. You can always download them to the new console later if you want to play them again.

Transferring data between the internal drives

The transfer includes game and save files, synced trophies, folders, screenshots and videos, user profile data, and messages. Passwords for apps will not transfer.

Before you begin the transfer, pay attention to what's going on outside. Don't do what I did and sit biting your nails through the transfer hoping a power loss doesn't happen because a severe thunderstorm is trashing the area where you live. After you've checked the weather report, do the following.

  • Sign both systems into the same PSN account on the same network.
  • Initiate the transfer on the new console. The first time you sign in on the new PS4 you'll be asked if you want to transfer data. Click "Yes" and move to the next bullet point. If you are transferring at a later time, go to Settings>System>Transfer Data From Another PS4 to start the process.
  • You'll be prompted to hold the power button on the old PS4 for one second until you hear a beep. Power button? You're not the first one to forget where it is. Remember those two buttons on the front of the PS4 that you almost never use that are flush with the surface and impossible to see? The upper one is the power button. If you have good vision and a bright light you can see tiny icons on the buttons that tell you which is which. Somebody at Sony needs to read Donald A. Norman's The Design of Everyday Things.
  • Choose which data you want to transfer from the list you're given.
  • Activate the new PS4 as the primary console.

How long the transfer takes will depend on your router connection and speed and how much data you're copying. I moved about 168 GB in about 45 minutes between a PS4 and a PS4 Pro.

Transferring an external drive

Remember back in 2013 when the PS4 and Xbox One were introduced and Sony destroyed Microsoft at their E3 press extravaganza? One of the highlights was Sony's video response to Microsoft's ridiculous, convoluted and greedy approach to sharing games. Sony took the same approach to transferring an external drive from one PS4 to another. Here's how to do it.

  • Unplug the external drive from the old PS4.
  • Plug the drive into a USB port on the new PS4.
  • Say "Thanks". The head bow is optional.

That's it. All of your old data is now accessible on your new console. Keep in mind that the data was copied from the old PS4, not erased. If you plan to get rid of the old machine, it's a good idea to erase the drive first.
